5 on a Friday

The ‘-ber’ months are upon us! This week I’m sharing five additions to my TBR, three book recommendations, and the two shows that we are currently watching.

1. Book sale. Last weekend, I visited the Friends of the Danville Library book sale and stocked up on five books for just $18.00. There was such a great selection, including 2024 releases! My picks are below. If you are local to the Bay Area, mark your calendars for the next book sale on Saturday, September 28th from 10am-2pm.

2. Author chat. Last week, I attended a virtual discussion featuring Katherine Center. My book club recently read The Bodyguard, published in 2022. She was an absolute delight and the time passed by so quickly. I also learned a new phrase, “positively valenced anticipation.” Also known as: hope. Yes, we know the structure and we know the ending…and that’s the point! Katherine mentioned that she loves hearing that readers often find her books during a difficult time in their lives.

3. A PTA book rec. I attended a PTA meeting where The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt was a recommended read for all parents and educators. This book explores the “play-based childhood” of the 1980s with the “phone-based childhood of the 2010s.” We’ve started to have discussions with my son about social media and screen time in general. I don’t think it is something that can be avoided, so I’m intrigued. The Surgeon General’s warning was also shared to help think about how we can be more intentional with technology.

4. The correct answer to every moral question. I just finished a book (that shall remain nameless) which sparked quite the discussion with some of my book-loving acquaintances. The conversation reminded me of a different book called How to Be Perfect by Michael Schur. I listened to the audio book on a long car-ride and it was fantastic! One of the big questions the book explores is, “Can you ever really separate the art from the artist?”

5. Currently watching. In my house, we rotate the streaming services we subscribe to and most recently we picked up Netflix (again). Since it’s almost fall, I told my husband that I wanted to watch all seven seasons of Gilmore Girls. There are 153 episodes, so I’m sure I will be watching it well into winter. I know I’m late to the party, but I hear there are some great book recommendations, so I look forward to adding even more books to my ever-growing TBR. My husband finished reading The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu earlier this year and so we agreed to watch that series together first; TBD if he joins me for Gilmore Girls! (BONUS: Did you hear that a sequel is in the works for One Tree Hill?)
