6 on a Saturday

Happy Saturday and welcome to the month of February! January was…long.

I don’t think “6 on a Saturday” is a new series here, I was just traveling this week so I was very limited on reading and writing time. I did have a chance to catch up with friends I haven’t seen in years, which is always totally worth it!

Here’s a quick 6:

1. This week I traveled with my Kindle and noticed I’m able to read faster. I think there is something about the ability to customize font size and read in any lighting that makes it so easy. Yes, I will continue to support local bookstores, but it’s also a good reminder to utilize tech when helpful – like when traveling! I have a really old Kindle Paperwhite.

2. Occasionally, I look at MMD’s Great E-Book Deals site to see what’s on sale. Today there is an Isabel Allende on sale for $2.99 along with a lot of other books from authors like Ann Patchett, Jodi Picoult, and Leigh Bardugo.

3. Most of my Kindle downloads are from Libby via my local library. Here’s how to get started with Libby! You can read e-books and listen to audiobooks for FREE. My husband started using Libby last January and he’s hooked!

4. Check out this quick behind-the-scenes from NPR. It explains how holds work for library e-books. (Spoiler alert: libraries pay a lot of money for digital copies!) Below are two books I’ve placed on hold!

5. On the plane, I watched Twisters and Fly Me to the Moon. Honestly, I thought both were really good!

6. I’m still reading Notes on a Nervous Planet by Matt Haig. After the last two weeks, I think the title is very fitting. There is one section called “Fiction is Freedom” that’s my favorite so far. Here’s a quote:

So often, reading is seen as important because of its social value. It is tied to education and the economy and so on. But that misses the whole point of reading.

Reading isn’t important because it helps to get you a job. It’s important because it gives you room to exist beyond the reality you’re given. It is how humans merge. How minds connect. Dreams. Empathy. Understanding. Escape.

Reading is love in action.

I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing weekend! My main plans for the day are to go for a walk, grab coffee from my favorite local shop, unpack, and hopefully finish my book!
