Beyond the Bookshelf: Planned TBR or Mood Reader?

Welcome to “Beyond the Bookshelf” where I take you behind the scenes of the reading and writing life!

Today I’m answering the question: Do you follow a planned TBR or are you a mood reader?

First of all, you know that each week on the Tuesday TBR I share a book that I’ve added to my “To Be Read” list. These are books that have grabbed my attention for one reason or another and I do actually plan to read them…when the mood strikes.

I’m also in two book clubs, so I try to read those books in a timely manner to be part of the discussions each month. I know myself pretty well so it’s best for me to start early, just in case I get sidetracked by other books along the way. Very likely.

If I had to put a number on it, I would say I’m 75% mood reader and 25% planned TBR. I work full-time, so I don’t want to feel like reading is just one more thing on my to do list.

I’m also a big fan of “bookish serendipity.” This is when a book on my TBR is on the shelf at my local library, or the e-book and audiobook are both available via the Libby app at the same time, or a book I’ve been wanting to read is at a Little Free Library I stopped by to share a book.

My conclusion: It’s hard to follow a planned TBR when fate is involved.

So tell me, do you plan your TBR or are you a mood reader?
