Beyond the Bookshelf: When to borrow? When to buy?

I started reading for fun again as an adult in my mid-twenties. At the time, I was buying every single book I was reading – mostly physical copies and audiobooks. I honestly just thought reading was going to be an expensive hobby.

About two years in, I started going to the library regularly, and then a few years later I discovered the Libby app. I would say nothing changed my relationship with reading more than free audiobooks and e-books from the library.

It took me several years to figure out my system for borrowing and buying books.

When do I borrow?

By default. Borrowing books from the library is generally my first choice. I love to go to the library and browse. I also enjoy seeing what’s available via Libby and placing books on hold!

When do I buy?

From independent bookstores. I average about one book per month from an independent bookstore and that seems to work well for me! It’s usually the monthly book club selection. If I’m traveling and visit an indie, I’ll buy a book then too!

When I *need* to. I mentioned before that I’m in two book clubs. One of them is an online book club, so I usually try to borrow books from the library, however, my holds don’t always come in on time. To read it in time for the discussion, I’ll buy the book!

Books written by my friends and family. Yes, I am lucky enough to know people IRL who have written books!

Library book sales. I love a library book sale! All proceeds benefit the library in some way and there are so many great deals.
