5 on a Friday

Welcome to Friday! Last night I attended an author event and I always leave feeling just so inspired about books, community, life, and the power of reading. Today I’m extra grateful to have this space to share with you and for everyone who reads and talks books with me!

California Book Club

I’m not usually an online shopper and I can resist almost any pop-up ad. However, if I see a reputable-looking ad for a free book club, I’m probably going to click on it. Now you know my greatest weakness, which is also how I learned about the California Book Club last week. Alta Journal’s California Book Club reads one book by a Golden State author each month. “Whether a classic, an overlooked gem, or an exciting recent release, the featured book is one that deepens our collective understanding of life in this dynamic, diverse state.” I haven’t had a chance to attend (yet!), but I wanted to share this opportunity with you. In May, the selection is Gold Fame Citrus by Claire Vaye Watkins. The virtual zoom conversation already happened this month, so stay tuned for the next pick!

To Be Read

What was on the Tuesday TBR? That’s a great question, I’d love to tell you.

Summer Reading Guide

By now you know I’m in the Modern Mrs. Darcy Book Club. Yesterday, Anne Bogel dropped the Summer Reading Guide (SRG)! I am meeting up with a small group this weekend to discuss the titles we are adding to our TBR. Even if you aren’t in MMD, I hear you can buy the SRG á la carte. I can’t wait to share the books I’m reading this summer!

When to Borrow? When to Buy?

This week in Beyond the Bookshelf, I dive into my book-borrowing and buying habits. It took me about ten years to develop my own personal system, but I think I’ve finally figured it out!

Reading & Well-Being

I loved this article from the Libby Life newsletter that highlights why reading is good for our well-being. From the article, “Stories remind us that other people have been there too—in the thick of it, on the edge of it, crawling out of it. Reading about someone else’s resilience can help you connect with your own. Books not only validate your feelings, they also give them company. They connect you to strangers who somehow feel like friends.”

I have some exciting news for my Lattes for Literacy update on Monday that I am so excited to share with you! Stay tuned.

Questions for your weekend:

  • Do you know of a book club highlighting local authors and stories set in your state?
  • Do you have a system for buying and borrowing books?
  • What are you excited to read this summer?
