Welcome to March and Happy National Reading Month! My family is excited for all things Spring – later sunsets, flowers in bloom, baseball games, and new book releases.
On Friday, I mentioned to my son that March is National Reading Month, and he was so excited that during breakfast we made a list of all the things we could do this month to celebrate reading in our house! Before we get to the list, here’s a little history:
National Reading Month is an annual celebration dedicated to fostering a love of reading. Schools, families, libraries, and community partners participate through reading challenges, literacy events, story hours, and classroom activities. This month highlights the importance of reading and reinforces how strong literacy skills shape academic performance and lifelong learning. (National Reading Month | RIF.org)
Below are ideas for celebrating the month:
- Read a book (or 10). He’s currently reading the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and I’m reading Vera’s Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers.
- Raise money for local libraries. You can start your own project like Lattes for Literacy!
- Sign-up for a library card. Check out everything you can access with a library card.
- Visit your local library.
- Attend a local library book sale.
- Download the Libby app. Read e-books and listen to audiobooks for FREE!
- Visit a bookstore. My favorites in the East Bay are Rakestraw and Orinda Books.
- Join a book club. I love being a member of the Modern Mrs. Darcy virtual book club!
- Give a book and share a book. Discover hidden gems in Little Free Libraries!
- Spend an entire day (or hour) reading!
- Recommend a book to someone else. Check out my 5 favorite books from 2025.
- Watch a movie based on a book. I loved People We Meet on Vacation and I’m looking forward to watching Remarkably Bright Creatures.
I hope this gives you some ideas or inspiration for celebrating reading in your house and community this month. Let me know your National Reading Month plans in the comments!
