Happy Friday (evening)! It’s the last weekend before school begins in our area, so we are going to be busy with all the back-to-school things. But first, I have 5 bookish updates to share with you, mostly about loving your local library!
Summer of (Library) Love
Last week my son visited the local library with his summer camp and he came home with two books: Fly Guy & Fly Girl: Friendly Frenzy and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth. He finished one of them that day and asked if we could go to the library again the next day. I’m a fan of any summer program that encourages reading and library love!

Linked-up Libraries
Over the weekend I found myself with about 20 minutes between events, so I headed to the Ygnacio Valley Library. I wanted to see if the book for my August in-person book club was available to borrow. The librarian explained that she could have it delivered from San Diego to my closest library branch. For context, we are about 500 miles north of San Diego.
I was shocked.
Then she told me all about Link+. It’s a free service where you can borrow materials that are not available from the Contra Costa Library Collection. There are 4.5 million unique titles available from public libraries across California. Just use your library card and request pick-up at your local library.
Libraries, and librarians, are amazing!

You deserve a prize, too.
While I was at the library, the librarian and I discussed our favorite recent reads (including this book and this book). She told me about the adult summer reading program and said there is still time to fill in a form and get a prize. When I completed it, I was able to pick out a free book. Of course I couldn’t pass up Anita de Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez.

Check, please!
This week my family ate dinner at EJ Phair and when it was time for the check, it was delivered in a book! I did not hesitate reaching for it. If you aren’t familiar, A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket is a 13-book series following three very unlucky children. It’s also a Netflix series!

Books for Sale!
If you are local to the East Bay, don’t miss the Friends of the Walnut Creek Library Book Sale tomorrow, Saturday, August 8th. The sale is from 10:00am to 3:30pm in the Oak View Room.
The best part? From 2:00-3:30 you can fill up an entire grocery bag of books for just $5.00!
All proceeds benefit the Walnut Creek Library’s programs and services.

That’s it for this week. I hope you are able to stay cool and soak up the last few days (or weeks!) of summer.
A few questions for your weekend:
- Have you ever received a library book from outside of your regular library system? Where did it come from?
- Did you or your children participate in a summer reading program?
