I know, I KNOW. We just celebrated Halloween, set our clocks back, and it’s not even Thanksgiving yet. But I wanted to share this holiday tradition now so you have time to prepare if are interested in doing it, too!
This will be our 7th year doing the “25 Days of Christmas” picture book tradition. Even though my son is too old for picture books (is there such a thing?), it’s a fun way to hit pause each night in the month of December and spend some family time together.

During the pandemic, I wanted to make the holiday season really special since we weren’t able to travel to see family. My son was three at the time and really enjoyed unwrapping gifts—sometimes more than the present itself!

I had several holiday picture books and I decided to try out the “25 days of Christmas” picture book countdown, starting on December 1st. I wrapped up 25 picture books individually, taped a number on the front, and put it under the tree.

On December 1st, he opened Book 1, on December 2nd, he opened Book 2, etc. This became a cozy nightly tradition with some reading fun! When he was much younger, he also practiced counting to find the right book each night!
Below are a few of our favorite holiday books to include:

You can visit the East Bay Bookshelf Bookshop Store for info on all the books above.
One question that I am often asked is if we use the same books each year. Yes, we do! I always have my eye on upcoming holiday picture book releases just in case we need to do a refresh, but for the most part they are the same!
What books would you add to this list?
