5 on a Friday

Happy Friday! This week has been filled with family, good food, and the NBA Finals. Oh yes, and books! Today I’m sharing a book-to-screen adaptation, a new-to-me bookstore, my current reading schedule, a bookstore celebrity sighting, and a new bookish word I learned!

Not a plane movie. Last week I flew to Texas and was looking for a movie to watch on the plane. When I saw Hamnet was an option, I knew I had to watch it. I read Hamnet (the book) by Maggie O’Farrell a few months ago, so I knew the movie was going to be heart-wrenching. It was. I told my cousin and she responded, “Yeah, that’s not a plane movie.” If you do choose to watch it in public, be prepared to ugly cry!

Books at the Beach. Last weekend I visited a new-to-me bookstore in Galveston, Texas called Then & Now Bookshop. It had such a great selection and was advertising an upcoming Katherine Center author event! (I’ve also attended an author event with her and she was fabulous!) Check out the new release from Ann Patchett I bought while I was there.

Read with me. I started reading Dolly All the Time by Annabel Monaghan this week. I’m on a tight timeline since it’s a new release and I borrowed the audiobook from the library. You can follow along with my reading schedule!

Bookstore Celebrity Sighting. Did you see that Zendaya visited Rakestraw Books in Danville? It was all over bookstagram! She’s holding Dune (one of my husband’s favorites!) and The Odyssey: both book-to-screen adaptations she stars in!

Spredges. You read that right. I was on a bookish adventure with my cousin when she said, “I like the spredges.” I had no idea what she was talking about. Then she explained. Sprayed edges = spredges. I even have a book with spredges: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. I got this book from the author event I attended!

I hope you can stay cool this weekend as summer heats up. We are celebrating my dad’s birthday and watching Game 5 of the NBA Finals!

Questions for your weekend:

  • Tell me about a bookstore you love.
  • What’s your favorite book with spredges?
  • Any basketball books I should read? This one has been recommended to me, but I haven’t read it yet!
