Beyond the Bookshelf: 10 Minute Hobbies

It’s Day 14 of my 30 Days of Writing project and today I’m sharing how 10 minute hobbies help me accomplish my goals.

Since I’m a mom and I work full-time, I’ve found that most of my hobbies fit into the margins of everyday life and are incremental in nature, meaning that every minute I put toward them allows me to make measurable progress.

Reading

I always have a book to read whether it’s a physical copy, e-book, or audiobook. I can listen to my audiobook while I’m driving or cleaning up the house. I take my e-reader or physical book to my son’s practices, the doctor’s office waiting room, or when I get a pedicure! I’ve found that building this habit keeps up the momentum to get through a book. It also helps to have the same book in multiple formats; another reason to have a library card!

Writing

When I do get a minute to myself, or when the inspiration strikes, I work on my blog for East Bay Bookshelf. Yes, on my phone! I’ve been dreaming of blogging for years and I’m so proud of myself for finally doing it! Lately I’ve been writing and scheduling posts about a week in advance. There’s so much I can do in a 5-10 minute writing session: brainstorm, upload pictures, write a first draft, add tags, update links, and do some editing. It all counts toward the final post!

Walking

Long-time readers of the blog know that I’m in constant pursuit of walking 1000 miles in a year. The really cool part about having a number to work toward is that any intentional time I spend walking counts toward this goal. I could go on a 1-hour walk or a 10-minute walk and every step I take counts!
